and I am the tutor behind Hobbs Tuition. As a mathematics and science tutor, I am passionate about building a learner's confidence and closing any gaps in their understanding to help them to achieve the results they are truly capable off.
I completed both my GCSE and a level studies at The Mandeville School. Throughout my time at the school, I pride myself on consistently being one of the highest scoring students in my year group in both maths and science tests. For maths in particular, I often find myself scoring particularly highly on my tests with the majority of my lost marks being solely due to silly mistakes like forgetting a single negative sign!
When I took my GCSEs in 2019, I was able to score a grade 9 in GCSE maths despite doing no revision in preparation for the maths exams and a grade 9-8 in combined science, making history as the first grade 9 science student in the school since the switch to the new grading system. As a result of this achievement, the head of science at the time had requested a copy of the transcripts of my live GCSE papers and used these for the successive combined science cohorts as exemplar answers. When I received a copy of my paper 1s myself, I noticed some rather simple mistakes that could have increased my raw marks even further.
In sixth form, I decided to do biology, psychology and maths for my a levels as I was incredibly interested in pursuing a wider knowledge base in the sciences and could never betray my first love... maths! However, I was incredibly enthusiastic to take my maths knowledge to the next level, managing to convince my head of year to allow me to take on AS level further maths in addition to these subjects. The one catch being that I would have to self-study the subject through The Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP) and receive occassional support from my a level maths teachers when I needed some extra support. When doing further maths, I discovered a love for incredibly advanced maths topics including imaginary numbers, sophiscitated algebraic proofs and some further trigonometry knowledge I did not know existed! Upon completing the course in 2021, I was able to secure an A grade and I was incredibly proud of myself for managing to teach the content to myself. When I completed my remaining a levels in 2022, I managed to obtains A's in biology and psychology and an A* in maths.
Following my a levels, I very uncharacteristically decided to pursue a degree in psychology for a few months through the university of Essex online before quickly realising that psychology was not the right course for me. The next year, I started a maths and statistics degree with the Open University whilst also pursuing a career as a youth worker before then changing my degree another two more times to maths and physics and then settling on just maths. I am now continuing to pursue my degree in maths with the Open University with me having to fill in some gaps due to the numerous degree changes!
Once I have finished my bachelors, I plan to attend a Russell group university to complete a masters degree, focusing on partial differential equations and computational mathematics.
Whilst I was still in sixth form, I took on some private tutoring clients for some KS3 and 11+ maths, leading me to discover a passion for installing my love and knowledge of maths into other students who were very pleased with my teaching ability. Following this, I then took on a role at AJ Learning Centre within Aylesbury to tutor both maths and science to students ranging from reception to sixth form study, with the occassional adult learner too. Whilst I was working there, I developed a reputation for being one of their best tutors and students would often move their tutoring hours to match my avaliability within the centre for when they were really struggling on a particular topic despite numerous of my colleagues attempting to explain it to them. When actually teaching, I would often capture both the attention and imaginations of everyone in the room, including other tutors, who were captured by my sometimes unorthodox teaching methods and explanations, which consistently earned my students impressive results.
Throughout my time with them, I gained a lot of experience working with students who have additional needs and supporting learners who really struggled, developing a desire to help these learners as much as possible. This lead me to gain a job back at The Mandeville School as an assistant teacher supporting SEN students with maths and science primarily. In the role, I was actually given two different year 11 form groups to conduct academic interventions every morning in maths, English and science as an attempt of boosting their grades as much as possible. Additionally, I was tasked with leading my own interventions based around exam techniques in maths, English and science to year 11 students who were struggling with these subjects in particular and I would also be regularly tasked with teaching our EBSNA class maths or science.
After making the decision to focus on my degree rather than working full-time, I started to think how I could maintain an income whilst still being able to instill the love and joys of maths and science to new students. It was then that the idea of setting up my own tutoring brand that can be run exactly how I would expect any tutoring company to work by providing high quality lesson, tailored to the individual learner at an affordable price with some leniency for those who may not be able to afford typical tutoring rates.
Then, Hobbs Tuition was born! Hobbs tuition is a sole trader tutoring organisation that prioritises the needs of the learner, ensuring that they have lessons tailored exactly to what they need to know, how they learn best and in a way that adds a bit of joy to their learning. Ultimately, I want Hobbs tuition to be a place where learners can get the support they need without feeling like they are simply being taught another lesson. Whether that means finally understanding a topic that has been causing problems for weeks, preparing for an important exam, or simply discovering that maths and scienxe can actually be enjoyable, I want every learner to leave a session feeling that little bit more confident than when they arrived.
Ever since I was young, I have had a passion and deep love for all things numbers! Whenever I could, I would be trying to learn new concepts beyond what I was learning at school at the time. I particularly liked trying to learn as much algebra as I could and as early as I could. Everytime I learnt something new and interesting, I would talk about it constantly and ask my maths teachers about the topic, trying to build up my confidence in applying these newly learnt concepts.
As well as having a burning curiosity for maths, I have an interest in science and how everything around me works and operates. I am particularly interested in how the techniques and theory from maths can be applied to other scientific disciplines to help solve real-world problems or further the scientific understanding of the world around us!
When I am not completing my university work or tutoring students, I can often be found indulging in the latest TV series or films, or attending to my ever growing power rangers collection. Whenever I can, I am out watching musicals, with my favourites being Six the musical, Everybody's Talking About Jamie and Dear Evan Hansen.

I am working towards a bachelors degree in maths through the Open University and should hopefully be graduating in 2028. In the current academic year, I am studying statistics, pure maths and computational applied maths, which is an exciting module looking at how we can use the python coding language to solve applied maths problems and numerical methods.
I am in the process of building my own sole trading tutoring service called Hobbs tuition from the ground up. This involves setting up all the behind the scenes processess, ensuring everything is ready to go, building up a large resource provision for our lessons and promoting the service to new learners.
